Brett Dalton – TVs next Man of Steel?
The news that Supergirl is officially bringing Superman back to The CW broke less than 48 hours ago, and the internet has been buzzing with dream casting the coveted role ever since. Despite a few obvious veteran choices being thrown in, such as Smallville’s Tom Welling, fans are looking forward to the possibility of a new Man of Steel donning the iconic cape this fall. Out of all the names making the rounds, one name seems to keep popping up: Brett Dalton.
With Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. now in his rearview mirror for good, the actor is currently on the lookout for his next noteworthy role. Since many fans would like to see him make his way from Marvel to DC, we’ve come up with five reasons why this role would be a great fit:
- He is already well versed in the comic book genre: Brett has extensive experience working in the comic book genre after being a part of Marvel TV for the last few years, excelling in his parts as both the hero-turned-traitor Grant Ward and the more villainous Hive. Brett’s love for comics has been a lifelong affair, with his love for lesser known characters such as Death’s Head II and Lobo well documented. With Brett’s experience, it seems he is already very aware of the responsibility an actor is given when they’re cast in the role of a beloved and iconic comic book character such as Superman.
- He’ll avoid being typecast in a villainous role: After three years of playing a baddie on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Brett’s next role could be the polar opposite of Grant Ward. Clark Kent is the epitome of goodness, with his true nature as Superman bringing an unmatched strength to the character. As the world’s greatest superhero, there is no grey area to Superman, with the character’s complexity coming from other areas in his life. Superman has not been getting a lot of love in the media, but maybe a more lighthearted and relatable version of the character could win back critics and fans alike.
- His acting range allows him to play a dual identity flawlessly: We got to watch Brett play three different characters in as many years on one TV show. However, when it comes to dual identities, the story of Superman reigns supreme. Brett has more than proven that he has the physical skill necessary to convey Superman’s brute strength, but this role would also give him the opportunity to exercise his comedic timing as the unassuming Clark Kent. We’ve seen him play multiple shades of the same character back to back, but think of how much fun it would be to watch him play the dual role of Superman and Clark at the same time!
- He already has his own legion of loyal fans that will follow him to his next venture: Brett Dalton’s popularity skyrocketed during his tenure on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and yet he’s still considered relatively unknown. We don’t yet know if the Supergirl series is looking to stunt cast the role, or if they want someone unknown, but with Brett they could have a little bit of both.
- This could open doors beyond the comic book genre: As of right now, the role of Superman is only scheduled to appear in the first two episodes of Supergirl’s second season. However, there is always the possibility that the character could recur in future episodes, or even appear in other DC shows, since the network is already planning their 4-show crossover in December. Moving Supergirl to The CW also means that he’d be landing a role on a network that likes to reuse their actors for different purposes. Brett is undoubtedly leading-man material, and appearing on this buzz-worthy, critically acclaimed show could even lead to him landing his very own pilot.
What do you think about Brett Dalton potentially taking flight as the Man of Steel? Do you like the idea of him making a move to DC? Regardless of what role he does choose to do next, we are looking forward to seeing what comes next for this incredibly talented actor.
10 movie roles we’d love to see Brett Dalton play
After finding success on the small screen, Brett Dalton is setting his sights on the big screen as well. With one independent film (Beside Still Waters) already making its rounds on DVD and two more (The Resurrection of Gavin Stone and The Tourist) in the pipeline waiting to be released, the young actor is working hard to make sure fans know he’s more than just the character he plays on TV.
We love Brett Dalton as Grant Ward on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. but it’s no secret that there are plenty of other roles we think he’d be brilliant in. From comedy to action to romance, Brett Dalton is the definition of leading man material and that’s why he doesn’t fit into just one category.
With that in mind, we’ve created a list of the top ten film roles we would like to see Brett in that have nothing to do with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Read on to see what we chose and let us know if you agree.
10. A Lethal Weapon Remake
Everyone knows that Lethal Weapon is a classic. There have been rumors that Hollywood has wanted to reboot this for a while. Sadly, as far as we know, there’s nothing more than rumors. But can you picture Brett Dalton reprising the role of Martin Riggs (played by Mel Gibson in the original films)? Bonus points if they cast The Flash’s Jesse L. Martin as Roger (originally played by Danny Glover). We love the idea of Marvel and DC coming together for a beloved buddy cop movie!
9. A Seth Rogen Comedy
The popularity of this genre is booming at the moment in Hollywood. It seems that comedian Seth Rogen is continuously dishing out hit after hit. He continues to cast some of Hollywood’s favorite leading men, from established stars like Zac Efron to up and coming actors such as Anthony Mackie. Brett definitely has the acting chops and amazing comedic timing to pull off a role of this nature. He would fit so well in a Seth Rogen comedy à la Neighbors and The Night Before.
8. A Musical
We’ve all heard Brett Dalton sing, right? And if you haven’t, you really should. You can check out some of that singing in this impromptu rendition of “Do You Wanna Build A Snowman?” (filmed to thank Kickstarter contributors of Beside Still Waters). As you can hear, he’s got a damn good voice on top of all those good looks. Imagine him as the fan favorite Fiyero in a film adaptation of the award winning musical, Wicked. Fans of the Broadway show have been itching for a film for years. Maybe it’s time Hollywood granted their wishes. Can we click our heels three times to make this happen?
7. A Disney Prince
Disney Pictures has started adapting their most famous fairytales into live action films. We’ve recently seen Cinderella and Maleficent on the big screen. Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid are already in works. Yet Disney still hasn’t announced a live action film with one of their most famous Disney Princesses of this generation, Rapunzel. Imagine a live action film based on Tangled where Brett can play the daring thief with a heart of gold, Flynn Rider. Are you picturing it? Good. Now, try getting that mental image out of your head. You won’t be able to. Trust us; we’ve been trying to for a long time.
6. A book adaptation
More and more books are being adapted into film every year. Whether it’s an epic adventure series like The Hunger Games or a suspenseful thriller like The Revenant, these films are either becoming blockbuster franchises or in the running for Oscars. That’s all great of course but what about the fun and much lighter books that don’t always get a lot of love in Hollywood even though they are beloved by readers around the world. The romantic comedy genre seems to be slowly dying. Fortunately, there are a lot of incredible books by a lot of talented authors that could be beautifully translated into film and breathe new life into the genre. We think Brett fits the leading man role in any of those books. He’s definitely swoon-worthy.
5. A Fast and the Furious Film
Even though one of its main stars has passed, the franchise about fast cars and elaborate heists is still going strong. With Hobbs seemingly compromised in his job to bring Dom and his crew to justice, the franchise could use a new FBI agent who’s trying to bring them all in. Brett already has experience playing a super spy and a by the book agent from his work on TV. Besides, can you picture the witty banter between him and Dwayne Johnson or Vin Diesel? Cue the Boy Scout jokes please!
4. A Shakespearean Adaptation
Shakespeare is no stranger to Hollywood adaptations. From Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet to Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing, movie fans chomp at the bit to see more of Shakespeare on screen. Whether it is a modern adaptation or a period piece, Brett Dalton would make an excellent Richard III. And bonus: the actor has actually expressed some interest in playing the character on stage. Why not make his dreams come true and cast him in a film adaptation of the famous king instead?
3. A DC Character in the DCEU
Marvel may have opened the doors for this young actor, but why stop there? If the whole Marvel thing doesn’t work out, there’s another comic company that is ready to get their cinematic universe off the ground in 2016. Brett would fit in perfectly as Dick Grayson (Nightwing) or Jason Todd (Red Hood). Both these characters are rough around the edges. One is the epitome of an action hero and the other is an anti-hero with a tortured soul. Either way, we’ve seen Brett be consistently good with similar characterizations on TV and we know he could really shine in either of these roles.
2. A lead role in Top Gun 2
Top Gun 2 seems to be moving forward with original cast members Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer seemingly on board to reprise their roles of Maverick and Iceman. But with these two veterans returning to the Naval Academy, presumably in mentoring roles, the film is likely to cast an entirely new cast of young up and coming talent to lead the franchise into a new generation. We think Brett could play the newest hothead cadet who reminds Maverick of his younger self. Maverick has likely matured with age and it’ll be fun to see him having to deal with the same attitude he used to give his own superior officers in the original film. Does Brett have the need for speed? Something tells us that he might be ready to step into the danger zone.
1. An Uncharted Film
Sony has been trying to get this project off the ground for a while now. But things haven’t clicked for them yet. Whether it’s the director, the screenwriter or the lead actor they’ve chosen, fans have been very lukewarm when it comes to their excitement over any news that comes out about this franchise. With that said, fans still haven’t given up on their favorite sarcastic, grave robbing action hero. We’re not the only ones who think Brett would be great for Nate. There’s even a hashtag on social media where fans express their love for this casting choice. Fans have already decided that they like Brett in the lead role of Nathan Drake, especially after seeing him in the role of Mike Munroe in the PlayStation game Until Dawn this year.
Whether he’s an action hero or tortured King, Brett Dalton is sure to make you cheer, laugh and cry with every performance, no matter what role he’s playing. This fan favorite’s bright star is definitely on the rise. And we can’t wait to see him light up Hollywood.
Style Countdown: Brett Dalton’s Top 10 Event Looks
As an actor, attending red carpet events is part of the job description. Many household names are known for a major hit or miss in their careers when it comes to choices made in terms of style or fashion. Luckily, for Brett Dalton, that hasn’t been the case. We ranked our top ten favorite styles the actor has worn since his career really took off with Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Take a trip down memory lane to celebrate Brett’s birthday, and check out the greatest hits his wardrobe’s had since he first appeared on the scene!
10. Captain America: The Winter Soldier Premiere (2014)
At first glance, and probably compared to the rest of his style, Brett’s maroon (or was it burgundy) suit from this red carpet event might not be on many minds as a “best look”. However, the reason this bold style kicks off our list is because of how daring it actually was. First of all, it’s a hard color to pull off. It’s even harder to pull off an entire suit of this color. But Brett does so confidently and without a problem. It even got the attention of his co-star Chloe Bennet’s father back home, who sent a quick message to his daughter asking her to tell Brett he looked really handsome that night (Chloe joked about this during a joint interview with the pair). We couldn’t agree more!
9. GBK & Pilot Pen Pre-Golden Globe Party (2014)
Brett clearly kicked off the year in style with this dressed down look. The actor wore his signature denim early on and everyone loved it. Fans have taken a liking to the hashtag #DenimForDalton to celebrate his love for all things denim. Whether he’s dressing up or dressing down, he’s made it known that he has his own sense of style, and it’s not going to fit in any stereotypical leading man box. We love how bold that message is!
8. LA PaleyFest (2014)
Back before Hydra ripped the rug out from under us, Brett showed up at PaleyFest already looking as dangerous as his character would soon become. With a leather jacket and dark denim, the actor was already starting to dress more like his on screen counterpart and fans loved it. Looking back on it now, this event took place right before the biggest episode of the series “Turn, Turn, Turn” and we’d like to think that Brett was already subconsciously sending a message to the audience with his new “bad boy” style. Of course, the actor later changed his social media accounts to reflect the iconic Hydra reveal, so maybe the leather jacket wasn’t so subconscious after all…
7. Sunset Overdrive Launch (2014)
One of our favorite styles Brett has is when he’s dressed down. This was the most dressed down he’d ever been at an event so far and we loved every bit of it. Wearing a customized Iron Man t-shirt designed by the actor’s personal friend, comic book artist Jeffrey Veregge, the actor really looks like he’s having fun. Everyone knows he’s a big fan of Iron Man and he’s not afraid to show his love for pop culture (the actor likes to talk about his favorite comics growing up). This style showed everyone that Brett Dalton is a fan just like the rest of us. Who knew that a single shirt could make someone so relatable?
6. TCA Summer Press Tour (2013)
Before the premiere of the TV show that would launch his career, Brett was just a young up and coming actor that had been recently cast in a Joss Whedon Pilot. No one knew anything about him but everyone was definitely intrigued by him. With cheekbones that could cut glass and a genuine smile that made women (and a lot of men) swoon; you already knew that Joss had found his next leading man in Brett Dalton. The actor played it safe with this classic look at one of his earliest events. That’s okay though because it worked. Sometimes it’s nice to play it safe and keep it classy. Brett has proven time and again that he knows when to be bold and when to be sophisticated.
5. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3 Premiere (2015)
Although there wasn’t much going on here, Brett completed his ensemble with one of our favorite accessories that he’s ever worn: his glasses. The natural look was a breath of fresh air at the press junket with fans. Coming straight from set, the actor probably didn’t have a lot of time to dress up for the event but that didn’t matter. The “Clark Kent” glasses were enough to make him standout on stage when sitting with the rest of his cast mates. And to make things better, the actor proudly wore a Hydra pin on his lapel. Once again, Brett showed us that he was having fun when he picked out his outfit. This is something that fans simply adore about the actor.
4. San Diego Comic Con Press Tour (2015)
The brown leather jacket that Brett paired with jeans and a plain white t-shirt at his third SDCC appearance quickly became a fan favorite. The jacket first appeared on screen as part of Grant Ward’s signature style throughout the second and third season of the series. However, when the actor started wearing it off screen at conventions and press events, the jacket quickly became one of the most celebrated articles of clothing to come out of the show. Fans did not hesitate to ask the show’s costume designer, Ann Foley, where they could purchase the jacket and joked about how many replicas of the jacket the character probably owned. Some fans even wondered if Brett took the jacket directly from set. We’re willing to bet that Ann never expected this to become one of her most famous designs from the TV series. But it is!
3. Florida Supercon (2015)
Before arriving in sunny South Florida, the actor made it known that he was packing a few surprises for fans. It was a hot summer day when Brett appeared at Supercon wearing an aquamarine shirt with pink sharks. The loud shirt was a hit with the many fans the actor met that weekend. He didn’t leave it there though. The actor kept things going with a traditional Cuban Guayabera before closing out his weekend on the beach with a shirt that featured palm trees. This weekend showed us all that dressed up or dressed down, Brett enjoys being silly. And that he can make anything look good, even the kinds of shirts that would make you cringe on anyone else.
2. Cinderella Premiere (2015)
Once again going with something classic, Brett looked like a literal Disney prince when he first stepped foot on the red carpet. Since first appearing on the Hollywood beat, the actor’s sense of style matured drastically with his classiest look. The dark blue hues brought out his best features flawlessly. This was exactly what you would expect to see on a leading man like Brett. This outfit made a tremendous statement to everyone. The serious style paired with his infectious laughter and smile showed us that he was still having fun. We love how easily he could fluctuate between being a leading man that commands your attention and just one of the guys who wants to kick back and hang.
1. Ant-Man Premiere (2015)
Choosing a number one for this list was difficult. There were a few things that needed to check off before any signature look could be crowned as best style. The reason this premiere stood out most was because of how flawless Brett actually looked on the red carpet. None of his other regular cast mates could attend this Marvel premiere and the actor, along with guest star J August Richards, represented his show beautifully. This premiere took place in the middle of summer and Brett captured the Californian laid back summer look without a problem. He wore a grey suit so he was still dressed up but he chose to not wear a tie and completed his ensemble with the kind of shoes that you wouldn’t think could work with a suit, yet somehow did. With his stubble and perfectly styled hair, the actor’s debonair style stood out. And he knew it too because this was the most confident we’d ever seen him at any red carpet event.
