“Having reluctantly agreed to share information with Rosalind and the ATCU, Coulson and the team go in search for the Inhuman who is killing off other Inhumans, and May feels that Hunter’s mission to take down Ward is getting too personal.”

Next week’s episode has the return of Brett as Grant Ward after an absence this week. What Ward’s up to is anyone’s guess, but Hunter certainly seems to have vengeance on his mind. The events of episode 3×03 show the lengths to which Hunter is prepared to go in his pursuit of Ward, but just how long is Melinda May going to let this continue? Especially given that the rest of Team SHIELD and the ATCU seem to be facing a common enemy…

Purpose in the Machine

Agents of SHIELD 3×02 'Purpose in the Machine' Review

Keyla Alves Teixeira Agents of SHIELD Leave a Comment

Official synopsis for Purpose in the Machine:

“Fitz and the team enlist the aid of an Asgardian to unlock the secrets of the ancient monolith that swallowed Simmons, and Agent May is at a crossroads in her personal and professional life.”

The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fan favorites have returned but now, what happens next? Simmons is back from what we assume was an alien planet – alien parasite anyone? – Grant Ward has a scheme in the works with Werner von Strucker, and my favorite secret keeper Agent May won’t open up about her absence from the team, even to her father! There have been complaints in earlier seasons of the series dragging out story lines. It seems like this won’t be an issue for season three, because they got right down to the question lingering in our minds all summer: when will we get Simmons back, and how?

Familiar faces seen in previous seasons came back this episode, from our favorite ex-husband Dr. Garner, to Professor Randolph (the Asgardian away from home). Randolph led Fitz, Bobbi, Coulson, Daisy, and Mack to a Frankenstein-like chamber where they concluded they could open the Kree monolith with Daisy’s quaking abilities.

Dr. Garner, shaping up to play a much larger role in the season, especially with the enrolment of Werner in his psyche class, provided some insight that he thinks Coulson is acting reckless. Coulson was always by the book and stuck with policy, but now the actions from the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. are indeed reckless, and very much leading him into a major consequence later in the season. He saw the effects on Daisy when they were first figuring out how to open the portal, but still let her continue trying to open it.

Coulson has changed and we should expect this behavior to occur again this season. Dr. Garner’s observation was completely true, and when it happens again, it might not end so pleasantly.

The swift and simple ease Grant Ward had taking down Werner’s men makes him a formidable antagonist that I am looking forward to watching this season. Although I do believe they could have led his character into a more meaningful direction instead of labeling him as the “bad guy”, I am excited to see his ultimate end game this season. What’s he planning with having Werner join in Dr. Garner’s class? What would not be surprising is the possibility of seeing a similar dynamic to the one young Grant had with Garrett. The main difference, I believe, being that Ward won’t be manipulating Werner into doing anything he doesn’t want to. It seems that the evil gene runs in the von Strucker family after all. We’re just hoping to see a truly great arc with Ward this season. We know Brett Dalton can definitely deliver, but can the show provide him with the material he deserves?

Ward is reshaping Hydra to his vision and, knowing how precise he is, I think he’ll be hard to get rid of when the team finds him again. Now that Agent May has joined Hunter in his search for Ward, how long will it be until we see Hunter and Ward finally face-off?

Agent May’s return was nicely understaded. She truly made herself seem like she was “out” based on her conversation with her father and then Hunter. It was sweet seeing the little Mulan reunion between James Hong (who played Chi-Fu) and Ming-Na (who was the voice of Mulan). I am not at all surprised that it didn’t take much for Hunter to convince May to join his crusade. It was his implication of an ongoing threat to May’s family from Ward that sealed the deal and got May to join him on his hunt. They’re gunning for Ward, but can they really get to him? Their plan doesn’t seem very well thought out at the moment so we’ll have to wait and see. Besides, Ward’s already a couple steps ahead of them now that his newest ally is getting close to May’s ex-husband.

Let’s take it back to the very beginning of the episode for a minute though. What’s up with that the secret order of individuals meeting and deciding who to sacrifice to the mysterious world inside the Kree monolith? I am speculating a lot and I want to guess that maybe the people chasing after Simmons were those individuals. Are there more portals to be discovered? If you have any guesses on who they might be, please send me your theories. I’d love to hear them!

For now, let’s all rejoice that Simmons is back and I give praise for her dramatic return. My favorite part of the episode was when Fitz leaped into the portal to save Simmons as Mack and Bobbi held it together, while Daisy used her impressive Quake abilities to keep it open. I am expecting that Professor Randolph will provide some insight on the Inhumans, especially after witnessing Daisy’s abilities and his reaction to finding out what she was. I’m hoping he will play a larger role as the season progresses.

Now that Simmons is back, what effects did her mysterious time away have on her? Is it smart to accept her back with open arms immediately? What’s Wards endgame with the revamping of Hydra? I have this overwhelming feeling that the show will lose one of its main cast members at some point this season but that’s just my very early speculation. What were your thoughts on “Purpose in the Machine”?

Gavin Stone – Behind the Scenes Photo October 7

Love is in the air in the newest behind the scenes still released for The Resurrection of Gavin Stone. Vertical Church Films has been releasing a series of behind the scenes on set photos and day to day video blogs (vlogs) hosted by the film’s director, Dallas Jenkins, as a form of grassroots marketing. It seems to be working well because fans are always asking for more behind the scenes goodies from the film’s production.

In this latest photo, we find our leading man Gavin Stone (Brett Dalton) seemingly sharing an honest and intimate moment with Kelly (Anjelah Johnson). The photo teases a turning point for Gavin, who is lying about his intentions and his faith throughout the film. There is no confirmation on where in the film this scene actually takes place but one can likely assume it is towards the end of their journey on screen.

Could this be the moment where Gavin finally tells Kelly the truth? Fans won’t have to wait much longer to find out.

The Resurrection of Gavin Stone is slated for release in 2016.

Grant Ward may not be known for his sense of humor, but Brett Dalton always knows how to entertain his audience. We’ve not seen a great deal of Ward on screen recently, but that hasn’t stopped Brett from sharing his vision for a ‘new Hydra’. Now Marvel is also getting in on the act with their latest video showing Brett “helping” Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer, Joe Quesada, design a new logo for the organization (pictured above).

Brett often fields questions regarding his character now heading up an “evil organization” with a smile and an astute observation that he’s in the business of rebranding. Recent suggestions include baking cookies and starting Hydra’s very own pizza place. At several of Brett’s con appearances mention has been made that a new logo would go a long way towards making Hydra seem less evil and more of a fun, hip and sexy entity. It seems as though Marvel likes the message, very much in evidence in this tongue-in-cheek video, showcasing Brett offering up some redesigns of his own.

Although it doesn’t seem as though the pink octopus, with a beaming smile and a cute bow in her hair, made the final cut, the video is about much more than just a logo. Full of Easter eggs for fans of the show, the ending of “to be continued..” implies that we haven’t seen the last of Marvel’s efforts to show that this Hydra really isn’t the same organization that many are familiar with. It’s an interesting publicity approach from the parent company and one that we certainly look forward to seeing more of. It has been recently confirmed, by Joe Quesada at New York Comic Con, that Brett himself both pitched and wrote the piece (video below).

Ward Behind the Wheel – Sneak Peek and Behind the Scenes of Agents of SHIELD 3×02

[ABC media]

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returned from their summer long hiatus on September 29th, but despite all the familiar faces in their blockbuster premiere episode, there was one particular character who many fans were asking about all night: where was Grant Ward? He may not have had a hand in the first episode back, but Marvel wants all their fans to know that Grant Ward will be back- and he’s back with a vengeance!

Releasing a series of ‘behind the scenes’ clips, featuring actor Brett Dalton filming an intricate action packed stunt sequence and explaining Hydra’s new motivations, Marvel proves once again that they know what they are doing when it comes to marketing their hit series. Fans have been sitting on the edge of their seats all summer waiting to find out what Ward’s new Hydra will be like and it looks like they won’t have to wait long to find out!

In the clip above, Dalton describes his new Hydra recruits as a team of “dented cans” who’ve been counted out in the world. “He really kind of believes in people and, for all of his twisted logic, there’s something really beautiful about that.”

The first time we’ll see Grant Ward in season 3 will be during one of the show’s most difficult action sequences to date. Directed by Kevin Tancharoen, fans can expect a gritty, fast paced car sequence that will highlight Ward in his new leadership position.

“When I first read the script, and I saw the car sequence… it started to get really scary,” Tancharoen confides.

It is evident that the young director, with the help of his veteran 2nd Unit Director, Garry Brown, was able to pull off what is probably the most ambitious live action sequence the series has ever had.

As if those goodies weren’t enough, Marvel has also released the actual clip from the episode to tease fans with what’s coming next for the newest Hydra leader.

“The cool thing about this season is that it is even bigger than the last one. It seems like we continue to outdo ourselves,” Dalton says before his excitement kicks into high gear. “This could be a season finale!”

Fans won’t have to wait long to see their favorite super spy return to television screens across America. And with these short teases, anticipation is already high with excitement for what’s coming next in the all new season of the series.

Laws of Nature

Agents of SHEILD 3×01 'Laws of Nature' Review

[ABC media]

Official synposis for Laws of Nature:

When a new Inhuman is discovered, Coulson and the team have an encounter with another organization seeking powered people; Fitz goes to extreme measures to determine how to get Simmons back.

Has Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. hit upon the magic formula that will help the show recover from its ratings disappointments in preceding seasons?

When the show premiered in 2013, many were hoping for a show about superheroes and, to some, it seemed that the show had failed to deliver. After the season 2 finale, with the introduction of Inhumans to the storyline, it seemed that they might actually get what they wanted all along; a show that felt like it was a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, rather than small references to the larger, more exciting world of Marvel. The Season 3 premiere, “Laws of Nature”, delivered what was promised: a fully capable S.H.I.E.L.D. with a badass team, new high tech gadgets and actual superheroes.

Who knew being healthy and taking your vitamins would result in massive changes biologically and becoming something better… something Inhuman. After the Terrigen crystals fell into the ocean during the Season 2 finale, we were expecting quite a few changes. Immediately from the start, the premiere kicked off with what we wanted: a newly transformed Inhuman, named Joey, discovering his ability to liquefy objects up to 3 meters away. Pretty cool, right? Even cooler to see our beloved Skye, going by her birth name Daisy now, starting to live up to her comic book counterpart Quake. Plus new gadgets that reminded us how capable S.H.I.E.L.D. can actually be and it’s refreshing to see our favorite team come out on top. My inner nerd got all giddy seeing the new S.H.I.E.L.D. “bus”  (known as the Zephyr 1) and the very convenient escaping “room to go” which swiftly got Joey out of harm’s way and away from another black ops team.

When Daisy, Mack, and Hunter arrived to Joey’s rescue, they knew exactly what to do and how to do it. A well orchestrated operation to save a new Inhuman from being captured from another interested party. Joey (who I will refer to as Meltdown for now) being openly gay provides us with a glimpse of the show’s growth by reflecting the challenges of real life individuals coming out, and how now he has another major change going on in him by becoming Inhuman. Smart move for the show to create a situation fans can relate to. S.H.I.E.L.D. is finally a team again and for fans it’s refreshing to see everyone have a similar goal: to find the Inhumans.

Stepping into a different role that we’re not accustomed to seeing, Bobbi is using her biology degree and handling the “How Do We Get Coulson’s Arm Back” operation. OK, not totally focusing on Coulson but she is stepping into a role which we think Jemma would be handling if she wasn’t running from god knows what in that short glimpse we had at the end of the episode. What is new and amazing to see about the season 3 premiere is the new dynamic of the team. Everyone has their duty and it seems everyone is focusing on doing their job. Again, refreshing to see the team on the same page because the last thing we needed was a conflicting ideals among teammates (which was a common theme last season).

Anyway, Bobbi is the acting “Brainiac” and covering for Fitz while he is on mission to save his love, Jemma. We found our favorite genius lover boy in Morocco trying to get an artifact which could lead to the answers he’s been looking for to get Jemma back. Only to be tragically denied that answer at end of the episode. Meanwhile, the bromance between Mack and Fitz might be revisited because of his growing concern for Fitz’s well being. From a fan perceptive, Fitz is distraught, depressed, and in denial of the reality the team has accepted: Jemma is gone. All of which gives us more reason to love FitzSimmons.

Director Coulson and his new arm was the only odd ball that hasn’t gotten used to calling Daisy… Daisy. Am I the only one who thinks this season is much sexier? Clark Gregg rocked his characters new digs and is sporting a darker look after Coulson’s arm was cut off. Let’s all thank the Marvel TV Gods for making the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. more exciting and hopefully it lasts throughout the season (sorry not sorry). Plus let’s talk about the meeting between Coulson and the beautiful Rosalind Price portrayed by Constance Zimmer (Unreal). What seemed like a d*ck measuring contest at first turned out to be a meeting of revelations. When Coulson thought he’d be catching Price off guard in the subway, she put him in his place but quickly got served with the horrifying truth: they might indeed be on the same side! Price’s team of black ops agents (the government created Advanced Threat Containment Unit, A.T.C.U.) and Coulson’s team aren’t the ones killing the Inhumans by blasting a hole through their chests. Instead, it’s the new Inhuman Lash who is causing such havoc.

Maybe anticipation of Matthew Willig’s reveal as Lash caused me to feel like there was something missing: great make-up effects. We’ll credit that the introduction of his character wasn’t in complete spotlight so maybe we haven’t seen it in its full glory but when he came crashing the Skye… I mean Daisy and Lincoln reunion party, he didn’t look so special. The visual effects though were on point especially when Lincoln and Daisy were side by side trying to hold off the powerful Inhuman. Either way, anticipation has begun for the rest of the season to find out where Lash came from, who is he working for, and what’s his deal with killing his fellow brethren? Another bizarre turn of events was Lincoln’s new opinion about Inhumans, calling it a curse, and hoping for the heritage to die.

The Terrigen mist is spreading and according to Coulson’s team findings, there’s only 17 months and 21 days until the complete spread across the world. I feel my inner nerd senses tingling again! Season 3 has set up itself for nothing short of amazing because of finally giving us the superhero show we so long awaited for. Revealing that Simmons is indeed in another galaxy gives us hope that show will connect with the Marvel cosmic universe. Along with all these exciting turn of events, where was Ward and Agent May? What other Inhumans will be discovered? Are we getting any MCU cameos this season? Regardless, this season is shaping up to be the best yet. What are your thoughts on the Season 3 premiere and what are you looking forward to seeing for the rest of the season?
